A mother and daughter who’ve just moved into their new house find themselves confined in the panic room when three thieves break into their house in search of lost treasures. The plot features thrilling action sequences and tense moments as the duo tries to make their way out of danger. The film features several real-world puzzles which keep the audience on their toes.
Phone Booth (2002)
This movie deserves an honourable mention as Colin Farrell’s character is stuck inside a phonebooth. His survival depends on his willingness to follow his captor’s instructions, who has gunmen ready to kill him right in the middle of the busy street. The highlight of the plot is that while the protagonist never leaves our sight, he cannot exit the phonebooth.
Saw (2004)
The OG escape movie is referenced every time we talk about escape rooms. The plot has two men chained to the wall inside a serial killer’s lair where they must play a game to evade death. The men must solve a series of puzzles to gain freedom, but at a huge cost to their physical and mental well-being.
House of 9 (2005)
Nine strangers are drugged, kidnapped, and locked inside a room with a mysterious voice controlling their every move. Failing to adhere to the instructions will result in certain death. With food, water, and money on the line, the stakes quickly start to rise when freedom is on the line.
Fermat’s Room (2007)
Four mathematical geniuses and experts in their respective fields are invited to a party to solve a set of intriguing puzzles. In the hope of making history the men find themselves in a room. However, the party soon comes to an end when they realize that the room is slowly shrinking. They must put their heads together and solve the riddle to escape being crushed alive. Fermat’s Room is filled with riddles and mathematical puzzles. While the movie is in Spanish, viewers can watch using subtitles.
Breathing Room (2008)
When a group of strangers wake up groggy in a room, they discover they all have unique tags. As they try and remember how they got there and find their way out, hidden clues about individuals start surfacing. The tension in the room quickly takes magnanimous proportions as a hidden voice pushes the captives to their limits by torturing them psychologically. The players are asked to start killing one another as there can only be a few survivors.
Exam (2009)
Exam features an excellent plot around human reactions and mystery. Eight candidates are locked inside a room and given 60-minutes to answer a set of questions for a chance to win a lucrative prize. They’ve all agreed to take the exam of their own free will. It all seems simple enough until tension begins to rise when the underlying plot slowly starts to reveal itself.
The Killing Room (2009)
The story follows a psychiatrist on her new job and her harrowing discoveries. The fictional government that she works for is prepared to go to any extent in the name of psychological experiments. Each of the subjects is given a tough choice - execute the other people in the room or face the consequences.
Infinity Chamber (2016)
A man confined in a smart prison cell must outwit the computer that’s assigned to keep an eye on him 24/7. We see flashbacks from the man’s life throughout the movie, which narrates how he got there. The biggest mystery is whether the protagonist is innocent and if he’ll make it out alive.
